I don’t enable dofollow on the comments section of my blog; in all honesty I don’t think you should either.
When I chose to leave the comments as they are as default, nofollow. I was not trying to be nasty to my commentators, I just thought that there are much better ways to reward them, some I have put into action, some I haven’t had time to fit in yet.
Helping you save the link juice
Alternatives to Dofollow comments I have put in place:
Top Commentator Plug-in – I like this much more as it rewards your top commentators, rather than each one.
Commentluv – I think this is great for the blogger, the commenter and also anyone who reads the comments, as it gives them a chance to see other posts they might like.
Future rewards to commentators:
Comment Contests – Within the coming months I will be having a variety of contests that reward commentators, these will include competitions such as ‘best comment’ and stuff like that.
Get Back to the Point!
There are many reasons people choose to enable dofollow on the blog comments, but in my mind none of the positives outweigh the negatives. Here are a few reasons for dofollow comments.
Reward Commentators - Amongst all the people I surveyed this was probably the most popular reason for enabling dofollow.
“I made http://bigrednotebook.com into a dofollow blog from the beginning. Participation deserves appreciation. “
Encourage Comments – It is the belief of many that enabling dofollow will increase comments, although I agree it might, are the new commentators really there for the community? If so, why didn’t they comment when you were dofollow? That’s what I’d ask myself.

Allowing dofollow comments helps if your blog is new to get the traffic. Its will definitly encourage more comments and traffic, but again spam will probably take over unless you have a good spam filter.
Then if you don’t care about PR then dofollow comment is okay, however using Top Commentators, DoFollow, KeywordLuv, CommentLuv plugins is Great!

hey Donny!
There are pluses and minuses to allowing dofollow comments. I do think it encourages comments but at the same time most of those comments are garbage. I recently had to deactivate the top commentator plugin because things were getting out of hand. At the start of each month I’d get bombed with comments from bloggers trying to grab a top 5 spot and most of their comments didn’t contribute at all. Its a shame but I just can’t be bothered monitoring every single comment so strictly.

Well, i agree that dofollow shouldn’t be allowed on comments, as it increases spam widely, and turn around time to fight with the spam is very big to normally maintain the quality of blog. But surely, some kind of rewards system is always positive, and can bring much better results.
Hi Donny, let’s admit there are too many online abusers out there. I strongly agree that Dofollow attracts a lot of spammers and It is really difficult for a blogger to go through all the comments and approve the right ones. I think Top Commentator is a good alternative for Dofollow.
Thanks for this great article, I have been wondering about the dofollow rule and i agree, if someone is there to leave a comment because they want to contribute to the discussion they will leave a comment whether it is dofollow or nofollow!

I actually have no idea whether mine is do or no so need to check that out. What’s the best way to know which one your blog is and how to change it from one to the other if you want to do that?
I love reading your blog – I know links are crucial for blog success but to be honest its not a topic I want to write about myself – if you ever have articles I can use (with appropriate credit of course), please let me know. Better yet, if you ever want to write guest blog posts on my blog about link building I would be delighted

oh donny youre right about that hope that people can have discipline on comenting a blog!!
I will start my blog soon and this turns out to be a guide for me, if to activate do follow or not, is it really to take do follow for the traffic? I don’t want a bunch of junk leaving on my blog when i established it…
I think that the top commentators plug-in is great. I’ve added it to my blog as well and have seen an increase in comments. It really does encourage people to leave a comment. Of course there is going to be some abuse but you can control that a bit. I just need to figure out how to add the top commentators to just the home page because right now it is showing on every page… If you know how to keep it just on the home page let me know.
I should say that do follow is one way of thanking your visitors. But I also wonder whats best on the two. Does it really matter in SEO?
