Internal Linking Strategies with Freddie Taylor

Hi guys, today I have something really special for you. A video from one of, if not, the best video bloggers in the blogosphere! Yes, that’s right, my main man Freddie Taylor!

Greetings Linkers Blog Family,

Today I want to share some insight on Internal Linking Strategy. First let me thank Danny Cooper for giving me an opportunity to address you today. Let’s get down to business.

Why have an Internal Links?

Before we can address an Internal Linking Strategy, we must address why you should link internally in the first place.

 1) Links are the currency of Google – Google decides on a sites importance by the number and relevance of  incoming links. Naturally, internal links are not going to carry the same weight as links for outside websites, but  they help. Therefore, it helps, it is not a real big deal to implement, then do it!
 2) It’s Easy – Yes. It is easy! This is your site. You control the links. And don’t have to ask anyone’s permission. A  couple of key strokes and you are finished, no big deal. Link inside your site.
 3) Positive Effect on Visitors – You are the host at your site and your visitors would prefer some good old fashion  hospitality. Internal links are like being a good host and showing your visitor around. You help them discover  relevant content they may need, reduce visitor anxiety and frustration, build rapport, and get them to stay on your  site longer. Internal links are just good business.
 4) Positive Website Effects – The bottom line is that internal linking exposes more content to your site visitors. This is the holy grail of internal linking. This creates an atmosphere where your visitors tend to stay on your site longer which raises the Avg. time on site, page views, page views per visit, while reducing your bounce rate. Those are some great benefits.

If that wasn’t enough, this results increase value for your site and potentially increases the value of your advertising slots. People staying on your site longer, visiting more pages makes your advertising more valuable.

Internal Linking Strategy

Ok Linkers Blog Family, let’s get to the crux of the matter and build our Internal Linking Strategy. Every blog needs a strategy. This is not the rocket science, but every blog needs strategy.

 1) Identify Stronger Pages and Link to New or Weaker Pages – You should be using a traffic analyzing software like  GA or Woopra. If not, start doing so immediately. Identify the pages that get the most traffic, holds visitors the  longest, and visitors leave from the least. These are your strong pages.

From these strong pages, create links to your new or weaker pages. The idea is to capitalize on the popularity of  these strong pages and direct traffic to the rest of your site.

You are taking time to create these strong pages. Be sure to maximize them to the fullest or it is a waste.

 2) Properly Define Your Anchor Text – Anchor text are the actual words that will be hyperlinked to one of your  internal pages. The major rule to follow here is to not use the “Click Here” crap as Danny calls it, so bluntly.

This misses the opportunity to use descriptive words to better entice your readers to click through to the next page.  In addition, it misses the opportunity to entice search engine spiders by using effective keyword phrases.

Hyperlinking the text is a way to capitalize on the Long Tail as well. It is very easy to make your Long Tail phrases  link throughout your site, which gives them further keywords relevance in search.

 3) Two Plugins to Consider and Website Placement – All this strategy and insight is great, but let’s get to the  practical and useful. What plugins should you use?

 A) Related Post Plugins – There are several choices to choose from, but essentially they do the something. These    plugins lace a list of 5 to 10 post that are related to the content being read by the visitors. These plugins are YARPP  and Related Plugin.

These plugins are great because they give readers more of what they are reading, while leading them to more  internal pages.

 B) Random Post Plugin – This plugin gives the readers a random list of post to be a reader’s thing. This is a way to  allow the readers to see the breath of articles, subjects, and information you have to offer.

Some great places to insert these plugins are in the side bar, the footer, but my favorite is at the end of a  post….before the comment section. The reason is because once the reader is finished reading a post, the next thing  they see is the Related or Random Plugin. If an article title is relevant or intriguing, readers will click the link and  stay on your site.

It’s Not Rocket Science, But Can Be Effective

There you have it Linkers Blog Family. It is not rocket science, but can be an effective strategy for you and your blog business.

Just remember links are the currency of Google, this is easy, has a positive effect on your visitors, and has a positive effect on your website. Your linking strategy should focus on linking strong pages to weaker ones, defining your anchor text, using Related and/or Random post plugins, and placing them effectively in your site.

The only thing that is left is implementation. You can do it!

YEahhhhh Freddie! So now I guess we’re going to see the motivation dude all over the place, right? What’s next? National TV? ;)

Really enjoyed it Freddie and couldn’t agree more with you: Internet linking is extremely important and capitalizing on your top content can be an effective way. While I agree with everything you’ve said like the random or related posts plugin, I have another method to share (sharing is good):

A blog of mine receive something like 80% of its traffic from Google, which is a lot and I have 2-3 really important articles driving maybe 50% of that traffic…So here’s what I’ve done: I manually edited these three articles to carefully add links to other relevant content and stuff like that. Manually editing three articles is no big deal and you get full control of what you put, thus better results! Just a thought ;)

Good viddy man, enjoyed it!

Good stuff, Ben!

I really like the idea of adding your best content to the plugins, or just manually inserting them yourself. That is a quality suggestion. I should have known one of those Coding guys would come up with something very useful.

Thanks for sharing!

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah boyeeeeeeee, I love it man! Good viddy yo, you laid it out man and it’s one of the easiest ways to increase all the points you touched on.

I’ve had the related posts rocking for a while, but linking from the actual posts to other posts is good too. Also, analyzing the posts that are drawing the most organic traffic and editing them like Ben said…good stuff man.

Sammich man, this is a very easy strategy! So easy, that I think a lot of people over look it and think it is not important. You cannot under estimate the importance of making your Blog Family feel comfortable on your site and allowing them to get around easily.

Freddie,

Great post. I really like the idea that using internal links in your posts is like giving a guest a tour of your home because it is very true.

I mean I don’t go to my friends houses and start looking around more just because they gave me a tour, but it does make me feel much more comfortable with their house which is exactly what you want to do with your “blog family”.

Reading posts that tel me to use new / more plugins generally ruin my day because it means I have to ad one more thing to my already busy site. But you have convinced me that I need at least the related posts plugin at the end of my post.

Thanks a lot for making me work harder now I have to install and style another plugin.

Making guest feel comfortable in your home is important, so why not extend that to those on your blog? It just makes sense. Glad you like that analogy.

Come on, Adam, adding a plugin is not that big of a deal. You made the leap to Skype, so you can do anything! Besides, that plugin is great and should be at the end of your blog post. It just makes sense to give your readers more of something that they like and need.

PS - It appears I am advertising for Danny on his site as well…even though I have a more recent post. He must be hacking our Comment Luv!!!

So you’re not suggesting the related AND random plugins at the same time, right?

I like the idea of the related posts pluggin. I think that could keep visitors on my site longer. If they finish reading one article, then they have the option of reading a related article. Maybe it might help bring visitors back also.

I don’t doubt the importance of internal linking as it does add some degree of juice to your page and or site.

I have a quick question though, that maybe Danny or Freddie can answer. I know a (tech blog) that mostly links internally on every post, and then occasionally links out at the bottom to a source.

What is up with that? Linking out is very important. Why do you think these guys do this.

I agree that the internal links are all about the “guided” tour. Let’s face it: there are rooms in out house that we do not want our guests to see otherwise they prolly won’t come back( so lock up the S&M room).

My blog is the same way as my house. When someone shows up to my blog I want them to come back. If the go about randomly about my blog, they are going to find those cruddy posts that were put together on day 4 of a bender (of course some of those are my best works). You want to direct your “guests” to the wicked posts that you are proud off.

It’s funny cause I actually just made one of those types of posts.

…oh and damn, Freddie, your post just inspired another great idea for, thanks dude.

I can jump in and answer that. By linking only within their site they are hoping to not to lose or share any of their pagerank, which is a proven technique for building strong internal pages. Whereas linking out has no proven benefit in terms of SEO so the majority of webmasters do so sparingly.

Hi

Great info! I’ve just started implementing internal links but it makes more sense to use the plugin instead.
