Dofollow Comments – Link Building Paradise?
This is the fourth and last post in the ‘Blog Commentating Series‘ leading up to the release of the Blog Comment Blueprint.
You may ask if I have enabled dofollow in the comment section of the blog? The answer would be no, and for good reason, people like me!
If you’re like me, a link builder at heart, you don’t see dofollow as a reward for commentating, you see it as a reason to.

Blog Commenting for links can be very rewarding, but only if you are very crafty about it, from a bloggers point of view I can tell you it’s not a very good feeling when you think someone is commenting simply to get a link from you.
If you do not comment intelligently there is a good chance your comment will be deleted, plus comment moderation on dofollow blogs is usually a lot higher than usual. Here are a few tips to keep your comment out of the recycle bin.
Read the whole post – If you have just read the title or the first few lines it becomes so obvious when you comment, don’t embarrass your self by writing a completely unrelated comment just because you wanted to save a moment or two.
Read other comments – Another mistake that will make you look stupid is repeating exactly what someone else has said, this is easily avoidable, read the other comments. If there are two many you can sometimes ignore this.
Don’t use anchor text – By using anchor text as your name, you are literally screaming at the blogger saying “I’m here for the link
”. A smarter way that usually works better is using your keywords intelligently, for example instead using the keyword ‘SEO Tips’ you could use SEO Master. It may not be as accurate, but it’s much more likely to be approved and it has the main keyword in it.
Write no less than 2 lines – As much as bloggers like to have they’re ego stroked, saying “Nice post, good job” just doesn’t satisfy their needs anymore, it is very unlikely a comment like that will get through moderation.
Use punctuation – Is it really that hard to use a full stop and comma every so often? Using punctuation will improve your approval rate drastically, for an even bigger increase use grammar too!
Reply to other comments – If your lacking inspiration for a comment, you may find it easier to simply reply to another persons comment. This is a perfectly valid strategy and it avoids the need for you to create something original.
If you take this into account when commenting on blogs your approval rate will be much higher, which ultimately means more links for you.

Even when I do this I end up looking like an idiot some times. Case in point your guest post from writer dad. So don’t just read the whole post read it thoroughly and make sure that in your haste to be the first commentator you don’t miss a key part.
I read that post from start to finish but somehow missed that it was a guest post. My bad. I looked stupid because I wasn’t careful. Read the whole thing and read it for comprehension.

I don’t think using my name as screaming saying heres my link. I use my name because I like people to know who I am. I try not to hide behind some keyword which can help me rank better for that word.
I hate the fact that sometimes I screw up typing the comment then look at it and relize I made a mistake or forgot punctuation. I guess we can always be perfect.

It would be much easier if there were some comments before mine
I agree with most of your tips, but I don’t see why should it be a problem if the commentator left keywords instead of real name.
As long as the comment provided is adding any value to the post, I don’t see why it shouldn’t be approved.
I would add this – commentators should ask questions (if there are some points left unexplained).
Cheers!

Just be yourself when you comment and use your blog title for the name. It’s simple. NO SPAM though.

Interesting thoughts on Do Follow. I am wondering if I should take off Do Follow on my site? Would that be a benefit to me?
My Mom told me I am a good person and that people liked me, so I think I am good there. People like me too! LMAO!

Seems that the dofollow thing is not related to the comment tips. Anyway, my blog is a dofollow one but you need to have at least 10 comments before your link to be free from nofollow tag. That is to prevent spammers to benefit from the link juice.

The benefit is you will have a lot of spam friends
Just kidding. There’s no actually a benefit from having a dofollow blog except that your comment count will increase and expect also that your comment spam will increase too. Blogs that are free from nofollow just want to give love and value to their commenters.

But it depends why are you commenting, if you work on Link Building it is not bad idea to leave comment with anchor text and normal comment, but if you are blogger and you want to be successful blogger it is better to use your real name and intelligent comment.

though i almost always write without capital letters (it’s a personal style thing), i definitely appreciate your guideline about using proper punctuation and following the rules of proper english. sadly, it’s not just on comments but also on many blogs themselves that you see a whole host of errors that were pretty obviously made in haste. the internet in general has “dumbed-down” the quality of writing overall (back in the day, you would NEVER NEVER see a typo in the new york times, for example; now it’s unusual not to find at least one or two, even in the magazine section). three cheers to you for speaking up for language integrity.

These are great tips, I agree with them. I never knew the grammar thing was so important. Its good to know that writing with proper grammar will help your chances of getting your comment approved. But some times its tough and there’s sure to be some mistakes in the comments.

It’s rare that straight kw’s make it past my blog. If you just wrote an 800 word comment, you may have just wasted a whole lot of time…people should really start reading comment policies.
Mine for instance clearly stated that kw’s are fine….but a real (first name at least) must be present somewhere for conversational purposes.

Your right, when link building it’s not a bad idea, but unfortunately a lot of bloggers don’t appreciate it.
November 1st, 2008 at 3:07 pm
I can understand you not wanting to use capital letters as it is your way of communicating, or your voice. Usually it’s not a problem when the words actually make sense.
November 1st, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Minor mistakes aren’t the problem. The problem begins when you can’t even understand a comment, let alone answer it.
November 1st, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Comment policies are quite boring
I’m guilty of ignoring a few myself.
November 1st, 2008 at 5:31 pm
True enough and sheer common sense and etiquette should make them not needed…but there are and can save a good comment from going bad. LOL

Another tip is to actually leave the comment yourself. Automatic commenting software is a good way to get nailed by the spam filter. I always roll my eyes when I see a comment like, “I see your point and I think I agree, but I’m not sure.” WTF?

I was going to start off by saying great post, but then you are right that would not do much for me. As for commenting it takes an extra few minutes to skim the posts and this will help determine the actual meaning of the post. As for no follow, follow I don’t care because you cant only have follows you got to have a combination of all types of links to make it look natural. And by the way nice pos….

Wow! Those are some really good tips on blog commenting.
By the way, what are your thoughts about replying to the first comment just to stay near the top spot in a blog post with lots of comments? Like at Shoemoney, many people reply to the first comment so that their blog will get seen by others instead of commenting usually since readers usually don’t read those comments which are at the bottom of the post.

I have heard mixed thoughts regarding the usage of anchor text in the comments. I certainly understand if you leave a thoughtless comment like. “Great post, thanks webmaster.” and use keyword anchor text how that would tend to piss off some blog owners. However what about if you use keywords in your anchor text and leave a pretty well written thought out comments and then sign your name at the bottom of the comment. In this situation do you think that it would be appropriate? I ask this because I myself have mixed feeling about this and at the same time I understand both points of view.

Man there’s good comments on this post. I find myself wanting to address/respond to those almost than the post itself! Typically, I use all lower-case, but for some reason, tend to try to be a bit more correct with upper-case, etc. Grammar is huge with me as I used to be an English teacher, and it’s tough to let it go — I always secretly wanna’ hold it against the writer when they make a typo or a misspell, but in the end, we all make mistakes and yes — if the substance is good, helpful, interesting, I end up looking past the little things to the meat.

Regarding dofollow and PR/link juice – I actually belive you will benefit from using dofollow on your comment. First off – if you’re a bit strickt – it will bring more quality to your comments. More people will comment – more traffic. And, you will be added on hundreds of dofollow blog lists on forums and blogs. This link juice will increase your PR.
Bye bye nofollow – welcome dofollow.
Best Regards,
Chris

In most such cases, you would find free web hosting companies offering limited services to individuals. For example, most such services would offer to host a website that is at the most 5 MB of size. Now, just so you know, a simple website that does not have a lot of video or audio files could work up to a size of 5 MB or less.
